Kings Canyon

The Rock at sunrise from the viewing platform at the caravan park on the morning we leave for Kings Canyon.

We arrive at the Kings Canyon Resort to be greeted by our friends once more, Steve and Glenn. Glenn’s laugh reminded Rob of a cross between a kookaburra and the internet sensation "annoying orange"!! This was soon to become his new nickname.

This is the view from the Kings Canyon Caravan Park at sunset. The haze behind the rocks is from the local bush fires.

This is the beginning  of the Kings Canyon Rim Walk. We heard later that this part of the walk is known as ‘Heart Attack Hill!!’ Hard work but boy was it worth it.

Another great spot for a picnic.

Yes mum, I always listened to the warnings! You will note there are no children with me….well at least not in the photograph.

On our way to the “Garden of Eden”. A permanent waterhole in the middle of the Canyon. We spent about an hour here….shady, cool, and beautiful. Benj took an unexpected swim, but grateful for the cooling off.

I am king of the world!!!!!

Does this give you some idea of the sheer edges of the canyon’s cliff face?

Shade once more, a rarity we don’t pass up.

We did it!!!!!!! Hot and exhausted, we all still agree that this was the best walk so far. 5.5 km’s of difficult and varied terrain. The layered sandstone of the canyon in contrast to the composition of Uluru and Kata Tjuta. The kids continued to impress us. Thank goodness for our Engel freezer in the back of the car for the endless supply of icecream rewards!

Back at the caravan park we visited the pub after dinner for a night with the Roadies. They played some music, told some gags and got the audience involved. We all had our turn on stage. This was then followed by some karaoke and open microphone time. Timna and Boaz both had a ball with the karaoke, Rob did an impromptu set. It was the perfect audience, they loved him so much they shouted both of us a schooner of beer. At $7.50 a pop, what a treat!

Timna had her debut performance. She played Summer Breeze, by Seals and Crofts.  Somehow we don’t think this will be her last. If you are wondering why Benj is not in any of these pics…..well he was too busy spending his money playing pinball. Like father like son. We spent some time talking with the Roadies – Petrea and Rueben. They arrived at Kings Canyon 11 years ago for a weekend, and have been performing 6 days a week 8 months of the year ever since. When saying our farewells Rob passed them his business card, saying when you retire give me a call!!!!
From here it is off to Alice Springs……
